June 2015 – present
Serving as executive director and president of Habitat for Humanity of NC, the statewide support organization (SSO) for 74 affiliates across the state. Habitat NC provides resource development, training, professional development opportunities, and advocacy services to affiliates of varying size, capacity, and experience, both urban and rural. Our emphasis is on strengthening the capacity of individual affiliates while advancing Habitat’s role in providing housing and family support services to working poor families from the mountains to the sea.
March 2014 – April 2015
Served as the executive director of Hospice of Stanly & the Uwharrie, a nonprofit hospice that has been serving Stanly, Montgomery and surrounding counties for 34 years. I helped lead the agency to a surplus position after a challenging period of change and a shrinking base of patients. Hospice enjoyed a very strong 2014 and is now positioned to provide better services than ever to a community that depends on its responsiveness and deep commitment to being present to families facing the death of a loved one.
2005 – May 2013
I helped build and launch SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals, a 40-bedroom hospital hospitality house for seriously ill adult patients, their family members and caregivers. As the founding executive director and capital campaign manager, I led this Chapel Hill-based, statewide nonprofit through the successful completion of an $8.1M capital and endowment campaign (oversubscribed by $1.6M); hired all lead staff; and oversaw the enlisting of 80 regular volunteers who help to run it. I managed the House for five years, filling it to 96% capacity within 12 months, overseeing all its operations and serving as its chief fundraiser. Over five years, the House ran a $530K cash surplus that allowed for the creation of a capital replacements fund. Within the next few years, the organization will be positioned to expand its facility.
1998 – 2005
I rehabilitated Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, setting it on a track of unsurpassed growth and development. In that time, the affiliate tripled its net assets to more than $6.5M and increased annual revenue from $1.8M to $6.8M. HFHWC’s annual budget grew from $1M to $7M, and the staff expanded from 11 to 26 members. The affiliate secured building sites for 100 houses while concurrently tripling the number of houses built each year. HFHWC also tripled sales in its ReStore during my tenure. The affiliate built 50 houses in 2003 alone, earning Habitat for Humanity International’s Affiliate of the Year Award for rapid increase in housing production and excellence in operations.
1985 –1998
From its infancy, I led the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in Raleigh, NC, through a period of rapid growth to organizational stability. Annual food distribution at this regional agency serving a third of the state increased during this time from 100K pounds to 6M pounds. FBCENC extended its services to 450 agencies. I conducted the organization’s first capital campaign, a $1.7M effort to buy the building that still houses its work. We outstripped our goal, ultimately raising $3.1M to increase our capacity to serve our clients.
